A Century of Careful Owners: Crown Heights Wiring, Decade by Decade

Crown Heights was built out in the early 1900s and has held unusually high owner-occupancy ever since. That single fact shapes its electrical systems more than the build date does.
Owner-occupied houses get maintained. They also get modified, repeatedly, by people who intend to stay. The result is a neighbourhood where the wiring tells a chronological story, and where reading that story is the fastest route to understanding any individual house.
1900s to 1920s: the original system
Knob and tube. Two conductors run separately, ceramic knobs holding them off framing, ceramic tubes where they pass through joists. Rubber or cloth insulation. No equipment grounding conductor, because the concept did not yet exist in residential practice.
Service was small, often 30 or 60 amps, feeding lighting and a handful of receptacles.
What survives today is usually partial. Some runs still live, some abandoned in place during later work, and the two are indistinguishable from an attic hatch.
1930s to 1940s: early cable
Fabric-sheathed cable begins appearing, with conductors bundled rather than run separately. Still ungrounded in most residential applications.
This vintage is the one that ages worst. The rubber insulation under the fabric becomes brittle, particularly in hot attic spaces, and it cracks when disturbed. A circuit that has sat untouched for eighty years can fail during the act of inspecting it.
1950s to 1960s: grounding arrives
Cable with a grounding conductor becomes standard. Service sizes rise to 100 amps as appliance loads grow.
Crown Heights houses that had a service upgrade in this era typically got a fuse panel or an early breaker panel, and this is the window where Federal Pacific and Zinsco equipment entered the market.
1970s to 1980s: the remodel decades
Kitchens and bathrooms get redone. New circuits get added for dishwashers, disposals and window air conditioning. Backstab terminations arrive with the devices of the period.
This is also when attic insulation gets blown in across a lot of older housing, which is the single most consequential event for any house that still had live knob and tube. The wiring depended on air circulation for heat dissipation and lost it.
1990s to 2010s: the second wave
GFCI protection appears in kitchens and baths, sometimes as part of a remodel and sometimes as a retrofit. Panel replacements happen. Some houses get partial rewires focused on the rooms that carry load.

2020s: capacity again
EV charging, heat pumps and home offices press against services sized for a different era. The current wave of work in Crown Heights is capacity rather than safety.
Why the chronology is the diagnostic
Knowing which decades a house has been through tells you what to look for.
A house that shows evidence of 1970s kitchen work and nothing since has ungrounded bedroom circuits, backstabs in the kitchen, and probably a service that has not been touched.
A house with a 1990s panel and GFCIs in the wet rooms has had someone competent involved, and the remaining questions are about the circuits nobody remodeled.
A house with visible knob and tube in the attic and insulation over it has one urgent item and several non-urgent ones.
The practical starting point
An identification visit rather than a quote. What wiring exists, which of it is live, what the service size is, what the panel brand is, and where the grounding electrode conductor actually terminates.

Permits and code

Nothing in the code requires a period house to be stripped back to framing. Existing installations remain lawful. New work meets current code. That is the whole rule and it leaves considerable room for a staged approach.
What the neighbourhood gets right
Because Crown Heights houses have generally had attentive owners, the documentation situation is better than in comparable-age housing elsewhere in the metro. Panel schedules are more likely to be accurate. Previous work is more likely to have been permitted.
If you own one, the paperwork in the basement or the file the previous owner left is worth reading before anyone starts tracing circuits. It frequently answers questions that would otherwise cost diagnostic hours.
The abandoned-wiring question
In houses that have been partially rewired across several decades, a great deal
of old conductor remains in walls and attics, disconnected and harmless.
Distinguishing abandoned runs from live ones matters, because the two look
identical and because an assumption in either direction is expensive. Assuming
live wiring is dead is dangerous. Assuming dead wiring is live means paying to
remediate something that poses no risk.
The determination is straightforward with a meter and access, and it is worth
doing as part of any assessment rather than leaving the attic full of unknowns.
Removing genuinely abandoned conductor is optional. Knowing which is which is
not.
